Mediator as a Neutral/Martin Rosenfeld, JD

Reuters reported the following on October 10, 2019 :”U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday he hopes he can mediate between Turkey and the Kurds following Turkey’s offensive on U.S.-allied Kurds in northeast Syria.” After giving Turkey the “green light” to “clear a path” in Syria where Kurds had been stationed, could he still be a mediator to avoid further conflict. By definition, a mediator is a third-party neutral. The mediator has no stake in the controversy. So despite the “hopes” of President Trump, he cannot mediate the Turkish offensive against the Kurds. Not will he be asked to do so. A mediator must always have “clean hands” and “good faith”. This is not such a situation. Alas.
